北海道大学は2005年に「持続可能な開発」国際戦略本部を設置し、社会と環境の持続可能性に係る5領域の研究を強力にサポートしてきました。これら （1）地球温暖化 （2）感染症対策 （3）水の統合的管理 （4）循環型社会の構築 （5）食糧・森林の安定的確保の領域では、すでに多くの研究成果が産まれています。そこで、これまでに培った科学的知見を活かし、科学者が地球規模の課題解決に向けた新たな社会の枠組みについて提言します。

Hokkaido University has established "Hokkaido University's Initiative for Sustainable Development" in 2005, and has vigorously encouraged research projects in five areas that explore ways toward achieving a sustainable relationship between society and the environment.
Already there is significant progress in research in these areas:
1. Global Warming
2. Infectious Diseases
3. Integrated Water Management
4. Recycle-oriented Society
5. Securing Food & Forests
To make use of the scientific knowledge acquired so far, scientists will suggest a new framework for society to resolve global challenges for a better and sustainable future.
