Cryoconite is dark-colored material on snow and ice of glaciers. It consists of windblown mineral particles, cold-adapted microbes, and organic matter derived from the microbes. They usually form small spherical aggregates known as cryoconite granules, whose spherical shape is maintained by filamentous cyanobacteria. Cryoconite substantially reduces albedo of the glacier surface and accelerates its melting. Although cryoconite can commonly be found on glaciers over the world, its abundance and characteristics vary among glaciers. Recently, studies have revealed that ice surface albedo of Greenland Ice Sheet and some other mountain glaciers significantly decreased. One of the possible causes of this albedo reduction is increase of cryoconite abundance on the glacier surface. The change of cryoconite abundance may be understood as response of glacier ecosystems to global environmental change, such as climate warming.
