Abstract: | Rural communities in Japan have been shrinking by the adverse effects of globalization and depopulation. To counter this, municipalities are trying to promote unique resources for revitalization of local economy. The utilization of local resource such as agricultural products is the key to rejuvenate those communities. This paper discusses the strategic utilization of local resource with the case study of wine brewing business in Ikeda, Hokkaido. The municipality has been managing the business over 50 years to promote community, and it has contributed to the local economy by earning more than 500 billion yen in wine sales. The results of this study indicate that the winery business significantly contribute to the municipality fiscally, and maximizes its nationwide recognition. Ikeda’s unique strategy of promoting itself based on winemaking is a promising example of local resource utilization. |
