Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate problems to overcome in expanding the areas planted with sugar beets in Hokkaido by means of a questionnaire survey. Correspondence analysis was used to understand the relation between present ideas about cultivation of sugar beets and plans for future planted areas. Ordered logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors playing a role in expanding the planted areas of sugar beets. The results found that farmers who do not wish to increase cultivation made many complaints about the production of sugar beets. Farmers who wish to increase cultivation were characterized by a number of important factors, to cultivate sugar beets with both transplantation and direct seedling, to secure a large workforce, and to regard sugar beet as a stable productive and profitable crop. The results showed that it is critical to provide increased productivity and a stable production environment while farm sizes are expanding in Hokkaido.
