Coarse Columnar austenite Grain (CCG) structure was observed in all the hypoperitectic carbon steels employed in this study. It was demonstrated that its formation mechanism is ascribable to the discontinuous grain growth from Fine Columnar austenite Grain (FCG) formed in the delta phase, in which both the delta phase and residual liquid phase act as the pinning phase in the grain growth process.
