Abstract: This paper compares the giving and receiving expressions of Japanese and Korean from the viewpoint of "directionality" and "completeness" of action. These terms have not previously been used in explaining the meaning and function of "-te ageru, -te kureru" sentences in Japanese, and "-e cwuta" sentences in Korean. I perform a questionnaire survey to native speakers of both languages in order to analyze what kind of differences exist between "-te ageru, -te kureru" and "-e cwuta". Our results show that "constraints of directionality" and "constraints of completeness" of action are relevant to the difference between the two languages. The paper clarifies that "-te ageru, -te kureru" expressions are sensitive to the directionality of the act from "uchi" to "soto" and vice versa. On the other hand, Korean "-e cwuta" expressions have constraints on the "completeness of action" which is performed.2009-08-31T15:00:00Z金, 銀珠This paper compares the giving and receiving expressions of Japanese and Korean from the viewpoint of "directionality" and "completeness" of action. Abstract: Community development, one of critical elements of the sustainable community management, has been increasing its importance in local communities in Japan in recent years. A gradual shift toward decentralization, since in 2003, has been forcing communities to adopt more self-sustaining development policies. At the same time, along with the enactment of the NPO Act in 1998, a variety of actors, including those outside from the communities, have entered grass-rooted activities in local communities. Such an increased involvement of outsiders in the community development process means that they also play an ever-more significant role in the empowerment of the local community. Although most articles discuss the controversial points of outsiders, there have been only a few studies evaluating the positive perspectives. This paper examines the role of outsiders in the community development process by discussing the relations between the working process and outsiders. The result of this study implies that more openly the community is managed, more significantly outsiders can contribute to the community development.2009-08-31T15:00:00Z敷田, 麻実Community development, one of critical elements of the sustainable community management, has been increasing its importance in local communities in Japan in recent years. Title: William Morris : Art for a Just Society

Abstract: This paper discusses William Morris's ideas about art, his involvement with socialism, and his vision of a just society. Morris believed that beauty, or in other words art, is inextricably linked with the cause of social justice. In his numerous lectures and writings Morris tells us what he means by a just society and suggests how to achieve it. Through the useful and beautiful merchandise produced by his company as well as his writings, he shows what such a world might look like. Above all, though, the very life Morris led embodied these ideas about art and society perhaps better than anything else. Indeed, Morris's concerns about the deterioration of our quality of life and the wanton destruction of the environment brought on by the industrial revolution and his vision of a desired just society enlivened with a meaningful role for art such as he showed us in News from Nowhere-seem especially pertinent today in the early 21st century.2009-08-31T15:00:00ZDarling, BruceTokita Darling, MasuyoThis paper discusses William Morris's ideas about art, his involvement with socialism, and his vision of a just society. Abstract: The central topic of this paper concerns the possibility of a different kind of scientific knowledge which, on the basis of Mannheim's certain vocabulary, is termed in this paper as "voluntaristic science". I have specifically demonstrated that voluntaristic science is an approach which is applied in the areas where knowledge and real action cannot be separated. Mannheim described this domain as, "the areas where there is a room for activity which is beyond the scope of rational behavior". When we focus on changing and differing perspectives on knowledge in these areas, three elements, social group, situation, and action, are extracted as crucial factors from Mannheim's analysis. Although voluntaristic science is conceptually opposed to intellectualistic science -- an approach which is mainly employed in natural sciences to capture quantitative and formal aspects of phenomenon, I have argued that both kinds of knowledge should be employed complementarily to give a better understanding and firmer grounds for those who make political or humanistic "decisions" in the world without a unique worldview.

Abstract: The aim of this article is to reconsider the relation between bios (the cultural and social life) and zoe (the biological life), dealing with the political thoughts of Antonio Gramsci. As is well known, his major interest is the cultural power ruling in the civil society. The notion of "hegemony" has had a great influence over the social sciences of the 20th century. But he also devotes a large part of the Prison Notebooks to researching the changes of the biological life in the industrial society (drinking, sexual instinct, etc.). I will reexamine the relation between these two major regions of his thoughts as a form of "individualization".

Abstract: The area study's question is why homogeneous actors bring different results in each country. Some theories provide the frameworks of thinking. But they are not suitable for African realities, because they are often constructed in Europe or America. So, it is important to criticize the theories for drawing out area specificities of socio-political phenomenon. And I observe some actors as units of comparative studies to investigate the area problems. Using this method, I analyze the relations between nationstate and social dynamism in Africa. Why did the ethnic conflicts occur under democratic and multiparty systems in African countries? I choose the peasant as a unit of comparative studies. I historically verify their acculturations through the pre-colonial, colonial and independent periods in Africa. We will find out, as a source of ethnic conflicts, the distance of social dynamism of peasants from nation-state in Africa.
