Title: Imagination in Non-site-specific Contents Tourism : Meetings between Fans and Heroes at Ultraman events
Authors: Tan, Xiang Ning
Abstract: Contents tourism research, as well as other research on fan tourism, has focused primarily on specific ‘sacred sites’ of fan tourism and the behaviours of fan tourists there. This article investigates the less-explored area of non-site- specific contents tourism using a theoretical approach centred on the concept of lieux d’imagination (Reijnders 2011), but extending the concept to include physical entities in addition to physical sites. This article focuses on the collaborative performances of meetings between fans and Ultraman heroes at temporary Ultraman events, paying particular attention to fan behaviours at such events. It finds that these performances of meetings make for deeply emotional, personalized, and satisfying contents tourism experiences for fans. By examining the meaningful imaginative experiences fans have even at sites with no relation to the narrative world, this article clarifies the role of imagination in non-site- specific contents tourism. The conclusions drawn also lead to an expanded perception of what sites can count as sacred sites of contents tourism, raising possibilities for further research in the field of contents tourism studies.; 2024-03-10T15:00:00ZTan, Xiang NingContents tourism research, as well as other research on fan tourism, has focused primarily on specific ‘sacred sites’ of fan tourism and the behaviours of fan tourists there. Title: Contents Tourism as a Component of Regional Development through Tourism in Kawagoe City, Japan
Authors: Toyozawa, Chikako
Abstract: Kawagoe city in Saitama prefecture is often considered a success story of town (re)vitalisation through tourism and kankō machizukuri (tourism-based city development). The preservation of its picturesque Edo-period-style main shopping street began in the 1960s, and its development as a Koedo (‘little Edo’) tourist site began in the Heisei period (1989-2019). This article discusses the development of Kawagoe as a tourist town from the perspective of its heritage, contents, and food tourism resources. While contents tourism has played crucial roles at various points in Kawagoe’s tourism development, ultimately it is only part of a much broader touristification process. The city has been a microcosm of both broader national strategy and also some of the challenges affecting the industry in recent decades, from the large increase in numbers of foreign visitors to the damaging effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Some of the potential downsides of touristification are also discussed, particularly the intractable problem of traffic congestion caused by overtourism.; 2024-03-08T15:00:00ZToyozawa, ChikakoKawagoe city in Saitama prefecture is often considered a success story of town (re)vitalisation through tourism and kankō machizukuri (tourism-based city development). Title: Travelling the Bakumatsu Opera The Woman Who Loved Toshizō : Towards a theory of music-related contents tourism
Authors: Seaton, Philip
Abstract: Within contents tourism research, music has assumed one of two main positions. First, it is one media/cultural format among many inducing tourism under the umbrella term of ‘contents tourism’. This is similar to the position of ‘music tourism’ within ‘media tourism’ in English. Second, it is treated more as a ‘creative element’ within a narrative world that triggers contents tourism. In this article, a performance of the Bakumatsu Opera The Woman Who Loved Toshizō is used as a starting point to consider how music fits within contents tourism research in the latter conceptualisation of music as a creative element. There are three main lines of discussion: 1) music within the varied categorisations of tourism studies, 2) contents tourism by performers/creators of musical works, and 3) music tourism’s connections with theatre tourism and other forms of live event tourism. This article offers some preliminary discussion regarding music-related contents tourism as a sub-genre of research within contents tourism studies.; 2022-11-14T15:00:00ZSeaton, PhilipWithin contents tourism research, music has assumed one of two main positions. Title: Between literary tourism and contents tourism : Marcel Proust and his madeleine as a tourist attraction
Authors: Sabre, Clothilde
Abstract: Marcel Proust is a famous French writer and his series of novels À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time) is considered a masterpiece of French literature. Consequently, tourism associated with Proust might be considered to be literary tourism limited to specialists. However, the two main sites associated with Proust in France, Illiers-Combray and Cabourg, demonstrate characteristics of contents tourism, not only in that Proust’s books have been adapted into other formats but also in that fictional narratives are associated with the tourist sites. This article describes preliminary investigations conducted at these two sites as part of a broader research project about contents tourism in France. Initial results show that the image of Proust is associated with various initiatives to promote these sites, from an accurate introduction to his fictional universe to branding that uses Proust as a popular character and plays with the image of the famous madeleine.; 2017-12-29T15:00:00ZSabre, ClothildeMarcel Proust is a famous French writer and his series of novels À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time) is considered a masterpiece of French literature.
; This paper analyzes the choices of places that "link fiction and reality" among participants at cosplay events from the perspective of contents tourism research. The research was conducted based on participant observation of the behaviour of cosplayers at the Toyako Manga Anime Festa (TMAF). Cosplayers found morphological or semasiological affinity between the contents and “space” of Toyako town, which had no connection with the contents, and they defined the “space” as a “place” to reproduce a secondary creation of the fictional world. This research note then expands discussion of the phenomenon beyond cosplay events to other instances of cosplay.2019-03-21T15:00:00Z小新井, 涼本研究では、コンテンツツーリズムの観点から、コスプレイベントにおけるコスプレ参加者の<リアルでフィクションを再現(re-enactment)する試み>について検討を行う。

Authors: Seaton, Philip
Abstract: This research note is part three of a three-part series documenting fieldwork at sites related to the 2003 film The Last Samurai. It contrasts the two major sites in Japan that experienced increased tourism levels as a result of the film: the shooting locations in Himeji and heritage sites in Kagoshima related to the ‘real last samurai’, Saigō Takamori. Despite the film being only very loosely based on Saigō’s life, the tourism impacts were greatest in Kagoshima, in other words the place where contents tourism relating to the actual history of ‘the last samurai’ (Saigō) occurred, and not in Himeji, where film tourism relating to The Last Samurai (the film) occurred. Comparison with the levels of tourism at shooting locations in New Zealand (in part I and part II of the article series) demonstrates a similar pattern: the tourism impacts were greatest in the country depicted in the film rather than the country where the film was made.; 2019-03-18T15:00:00ZSeaton, PhilipThis research note is part three of a three-part series documenting fieldwork at sites related to the 2003 film The Last Samurai. Authors: Seaton, Philip
Abstract: This research note is part two of a three-part series documenting fieldwork at sites related to the 2003 film The Last Samurai. The ‘failure’ of Last Samurai tourism at shooting locations in Taranaki has often been contrasted with the success of tourism in New Zealand relating to Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Based on fieldwork at Hobbiton in August 2017, this research note identifies the main reasons why Hobbiton became a popular tourist attraction with up to 3000 visitors per day in 2016-2017, while by the same time Last Samurai tourism had effectively ceased to exist. The reasons for Hobbiton’s ‘success’, by contrast, are identified as a reason why Last Samurai sites might remain attractive for film tourists, while Hobbiton has lost much of its appeal for film tourism purists.; 2019-03-18T15:00:00ZSeaton, PhilipThis research note is part two of a three-part series documenting fieldwork at sites related to the 2003 film The Last Samurai. Abstract: This research note is Part I of a three-part series documenting fieldwork at sites related to the 2003 film The Last Samurai. While The Last Samurai has a prominent position in New Zealand’s national tourism promotion as an example of film tourism, it has disappeared from local tourism promotion in the region of Taranaki, where the film was shot. On a guided tour of the main locations in August 2017, the reasons for the failure to develop sustainable Last Samurai tourism became apparent. A lack of commercial potential stemmed mainly from the relationship of the sites to the contents (Taranaki was a runaway location standing in for Meiji period Japan), rather than from the remoteness or unattractiveness of the sites as a tourism destination. There was a registered increase in tourism relating to the film in 2003, which suggests that the problem rested in over-inflated expectations rather than a failure to seize the opportunity attracting tourism relating to The Last Samurai.; 2019-03-18T15:00:00ZSeaton, PhilipThis research note is Part I of a three-part series documenting fieldwork at sites related to the 2003 film The Last Samurai. In doing so, it also assesses Bollywood tourism within the context of contents tourism and brings a non-western perspective to the study of film tourism research by shifting focus to Asia as a fertile area for studying Bollywood tourism. As past research has revealed, Bollywood is significant in the global cinematic context. However, studies concerning popular Hindi cinema’s role in influencing travel decisions, and consequently tourism flows, are still very fragmented, and they have not yet been undertaken from a contents tourism perspective. Theoretical connections between Bollywood tourism and contents tourism are discussed, with particular reference to Bollywood tourism to Japan and the unique song-narrative format of Bollywood cinema. Finally, the research note reflects on the current challenges facing Bollywood tourism to Japan and potential future directions.; 2019-02-24T15:00:00ZNanjangud, ApoorvaThis research note explores the current challenges and potential of Bollywood tourism to Japan.
