In order to develop oral communication ability, it is necessary to learn vocabulary, expressions and discourse structures appropriate to various situations. At the same time learners also require the skills to listen carefully, to think of the appropriate response and to speak instantaneously. In beginners' conversation classes, innovative materials have been developed with the aim of developing these skills. These new materials include pictures that show various situations or scenes with short explanations. Rather than practicing model conversations and new sentence patterns typically introduced at the beginning of lessons, students first consider the situation and think of appropriate expressions as a speaker, or appropriate responses as a listener. In this way, students can practice carrying out conversations in an interactive and meaningful context. Practice with the materials offers learners more practical situations and makes understanding easier. Learners can speak aloud various expressions for each situation, and evaluate the appropriateness of different expressions. This is a process of metacognition, and these interactive activities allow learners to enhance their metacognitive skills, and to develop their Japanese oral communication ability.
