Abstract: The Weltchronik of Heinrich von München (compiled around 1370/80) is known for numerous variations of its manuscript tradition. For the analysis of the open text history two elements should be considered. On the one hand, it is essential to consider the conditions among the manuscripts of the Weltchronik such as techniques of adaptation including omission, shortening, extending, and changing of the sequence of narratives in the manuscripts of the Weltchronik. On the other hand, the copyists combined the literary models in variable ways so that every manuscript has its own structure. Both of these attitudes among productive writers led to a mishmash of every manuscript. Heinrich's Weltchronik experienced a brief but intensive boom: Almost of all the manuscripts were written in the 30 years following the formation of the original(s) – perhaps there were several originals. Apart from the fragments, the manuscripts of the Weltchronik contain between 30,000 and 100,000 verses and are, moreover, often decorated with numerous paintings. It is evident that the patrons had enormous financial means. Every patron expected that his copyist would produce a new version of the Weltchronik, and this expectation caused him a passion for collecting of material.
