This study examined the experience of being a mother after separating from their children ("KOBANARE" in Japanese). To explore this issue, interviews of two mothers were conducted and analyzed qualitatively using life history method. The study revealed three main findings. First, separation does not mean the end of motherhood, but instead is perceived as a transitional stage; so, the mother still plays a meaningful role in the child's life even after separation. Second, after separation, the mother continues to fulfill her role by looking back on her parenting. Third, the meaning of being a mother changes but still remains after separation, which means that this transition is also part of motherhood. To conclude, this study has showed that it is crucial to understand that motherhood has a longer time frame as it includes the post-separation stage. Based on the assumption that motherhood is a lifetime journey, this research further suggests the importance of examining the definition of motherhood and the characteristics of the child-parent relationship.
