Abstract

This article examines the usage of the kekka expression connecting cause and result clauses in Japanese through an analysis of a corpus of scientific writings in several fields: agriculture, engineering and social science. In this analysis, the following results were found: 1) kekka is usually used in the following sentence patterns: nouns + no / verbs expressing volitional actions or changes in -- ta-form, kekka, non-volitional verb forms in --ta-form. 2) Both continuous action or state expressions and punctual expressions can be placed in the clauses which precede kekka. But in papers in the agriculture field there are some cases where they prefer punctual expressions in the clause preceding kekka. 3) There are some differences in the usage of kekka depending on each field. The differences are as follows: a) Kekka is often used to describe results of research or experiments in papers on engineering and agriculture. b) In the clause following kekka, dictionary-forms are more often used in papers on social science. In this case, kekka expresses inevitable causal relationship. c) In the clause preceeding kekka, words expressing continuous action or state appear more in agriculture papers.
