近代の名望家に関する従来の研究では、彼らを近世の豪農層から連続する存在と理解する傾向が強かった。しかし近年では、近代になって新たに勃興した名望家がいることが確認され、改めて近代的な存在として名望家を把握しなおすことが提起されている。 近代的な存在として名望家の把握を試みた時、北海道は非常に重要なフィールドである。なぜなら、北海道の、特に内陸部においては、明治になって大挙して押し寄せた移民たちによって新村落の形成が相次いで行われたのであり、ここに登場した名望家たちには、近世以来の地縁的な連続性は一切ないからである。しかし、現在、北海道の名望家研究は量的に乏しい。それは、彼らが名望家としてよりも、北海道の開拓者として把握されてきたことが一因と思われる。 以上の研究史的背景を踏まえ、筆者は、北海道における名望家研究の事例を積み上げる必要を痛感した。しかし、そのためには、なによりもまず、名望家に関する史料を発掘しなければならない。そこで筆者は、北海道大学の関係者たちとともに、北広島市エコミュージアムセンターが収蔵する阿部仁太郎関係資料の調査に取り組んできた。仁太郎は、明治時代に豊平村（現在の札幌市豊平区）に入植し、近代的な名望家へと立身した人物である。しかし、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大のため、調査の中断が余儀ないものとなった。 そこで今回は、仁太郎の豊平入植以前の動向について、北海道立図書館・国立公文書館などの収蔵資料を用いて明らかにしていこうと思う。本稿においては特に、近代的な名望家となった仁太郎が、貧困層の出身であったことを明らかにする。この成果は、名望家と豪農は必ずしも連続しないことを、間接的に示すであろう。
Traditional studies of Modern Notables have tended to understand them as a continuum of early modern wealthy farmers. However, in recent years, it has been confirmed that there are Notables who have newly risen in the modern era, and it has been proposed to reassess the Notables as modern beings. Hokkaido will be a very important area in studying Notables as a hierarchy unique to modern times. Because, in Hokkaido, especially in the inland area, new villages were formed one after another by a large number of immigrants in the Meiji era. Therefore, there is no wealthy farmer since the early modern period. However, at present, there are few studies on Notables in Hokkaido. I think this is partly because they have been considered as pioneers in Hokkaido rather than Notables. Based on the above, the author keenly realized that it is necessary to increase research on capitalists in Hokkaido. To do so, it is first necessary to discover historical materials related to Notables. Therefore, the author has been working with the people of Hokkaido University to investigate the materials related to Nitaro Abe in the Kitahiroshima City Eco Museum Center. Nitaro was a person who settled in Toyohira Village (currently Toyohira Ward, Sapporo City) in the Meiji era and became a Modern Notables. However, due to the spread of the COVID-19, the investigation had to be interrupted. Therefore, this time, I would like to clarify the trends of Nitaro before the settlement of Toyohira using the materials stored in the Hokkaido Public Library and the National Archives of Japan. In this paper, it is revealed that Nitaro, who became a modern capitalist, came from a poor class. This result would indirectly indicate that the Modern Notables and the wealthy farmers are not necessarily continuous.
