Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to propose an approach to the ethical problems of social robots using the philosophy of fiction. In the first part of the paper, I will review the fact that we regard robots as social beings with whom we can form social relationships and argue that there are ethical issues involved and that these issues are like those that have been discussed in fiction. In the second part, I will propose a“ fictional approach” in which the social relations between robots and us are considered “fiction” in a broad sense. I review previous research by Rodogno (2016) and Mizukami (2020) and point out that although Mizukami adopts Walton’s make-believe theory, it is not descriptively correct. In the third part, I use the “Paradox of Fiction,” which analyzes the emotions involved in fiction, to propose the“ Paradox of Social Robots,” which is a trilemma about the emotions involved in social robots. Then, based on the analysis, I examine the ethical issues that arise when the social relationship with social robots is regarded as fiction. Finally, I shed new light on the ethical issues of social robots from an aesthetic perspective. In other words, I advocate a new approach that there may be an aesthetic norm that social robots as social beings should be regarded as fiction.
