Abstract

The present paper presents current knowledge and issues regarding the datable limits of obsidian hydration dating (OHD) through a review of reported case studies. The upper limit is implied from the application of OHD to the artifacts from the Upper Pleistocene cultural complex of MSA (i.e., Prospect Industry) in East Africa, and the geological study of North American obsidian outcrops created during the Middle Pleistocene (i.e., Chibanian). The lower limit is defined by the obsidian flakes with historically known chipped date of 71 years ago in California, the American West. These studies suggest that OHD can date up to 0.1Ma in tropical environment and 1Ma in temperate setting, while it can give a date younger than 100 years ago. With respect to the ambiguous question as to whether hydration rims can be spalled off at certain thickness, some effects of erosion induced by physicochemical reaction between molecules in obsidian and diffused water that may be also operated in hydration process.
