Abstract

We have identified new formation routes of diamond in interstellar clouds and parent bodies of primitive meteorites. It was shown that diamond precursor nucleated as a result of UV photolysis of interstellar ice mixtures in molecular clouds, and grew with further UV irradiation in diffuse clouds. This suggests that diamond is ubiquitous in space. We also performed experiments on the process of aqueous alteration and subsequent heating of interstellar organic materials in meteoritic parent bodies. The resulting sample shows strong evidence of diamond formation. The various characteristics of nanodiamonds in meteorites are well explained by the formation in interstellar clouds and parent bodies of meteorites.
