シアノバクテリアは真正細菌の中で独自の分類群を構成するが，非常に多様で生態学的にも重要である．またモデル生物として研究が非常に進んでいる．研究材料として代表的な種を選んでその特徴を概説する．
Cyanobacteria are the only group of prokaryotes that perform oxygenic photosynthesis. They consist of diverse varieties of species, such as unicellular or filamentous, nitrogen-fixing, motile or non-motile, obligate or facultative phototrophic ones. We summarized features of these various cyanobacterial species and a primitive eukaryote Cyanophora. Culture protocols and some tips were also included.
