安定同位体は，光合成の環境応答を調べる上で細胞レベルから生態系レベルまで広範囲に利用できるツールである．安定同位体とは何かを解説し，その測定方法と光合成研究への利用法を解説する．
Stable isotopes have been widely used in biochemistry, physiology and ecology as an useful index for plant environmental responses. Principles of the isotope fractionation and its application to photosynthesis research will be discussed.
