ヒメツリガネゴケは植物の中では例外的に相同組換え能が高いため，核ゲノムと葉緑体ゲノムに遺伝子を導入することが容易である．導入法としては，ポリエチレングリコール法が一般的であるが，パーティクルボンバードメント法も適用可能である．
Homologous recombination occurs at a high frequency between genomic sequences in transforming DNA and the corresponding chromosomal or chloroplast sequences, allowing precise inactivation or modification of genes. For the transformation of Physcomitrella patens, polyethylene glycol (PEG)-mediated transformation of protoplasts is almost exclusively applied even though particle bombardment is as well applicable.
