初級の学習者を対象とした読解授業は文型学習の仕上げと位置づけられることが多い。しかし、特に日本国内に居住する学習者にとっては、習得文型の応用としての教室活動のみでは、実生活における読む活動のためのトレーニングとして十分とはいえない。そこで本稿執筆者らは、北海道大学留学生センターの一般日本語コース及び集中日本語コースで初級読解授業を履修している学生達のニーズを分析し、そこから引き出される結果に応じた、学習者の実生活に役立つ読む活動およびそのための教材開発に取り組んできた。このことにより、初級の読解クラスの中により学習者のニーズに即した要素を加えるためである。また、未知の語彙、文型を含んだテクストを、周辺知識や推測能力を利用しながら読む練習をすることで、その活動が学習者の自主的な活動に結びつくよう配慮した。
Reading activities for beginners have generally been taught through application exercises of grammar. These sort of activities alone are not sufficient especially for learners in Japan because the activities are not authentic nor suitable for actual reading in their daily life. We therefore have been trying to develop reading activities with materials useful for students' daily life. The plan is based on data drawn from needs analyses, which were conducted on students attending reading classes in the General and Intensive Japanese Courses at the International Student Center, Hokkaido University. Our goal is to include in our reading classes more activities based on the students' needs. We also stress the need for reading activities which encourage students to use their background knowledge and guessing abilities to read texts containing unfamiliar vocabulary or sentence patterns. Such activities, we believe, can better enable students to undertake independent study outside class.
