Abstract

To provide an insight into cinema directors and their films, I give a class "World Cinema Directors and Their Films" for university students. In this class, students watch a variety of films and then examine various aspects and images as presented in these films. I give the last version of this program, using films based on the weekly themes listed below. Course Description. Week 1. General Introduction: Derek Jarman (Blue) and many films. Week 2. Sergei Eisenstein: The Battleship Potemkin. Week 3. Luis Buñuel: An Andalusian Dog, Robert Flaherty: Nanook of the North, Man of Aran. Week 4. Leni Riefenstahl: Festival of Nations, Triumph of the Will. Week 5. How to analyze: Stanley Kubrick (Lolita), David Hamilton (Bilitis), Serge Gainsbourg (Stan the Flasher) etc. Federico Fellini: La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, Toby Dammit (in Spirits of the Dead). Week 6. Jean-Luc Godard: Breathless. Week 7. Roman Polanski: Knife in the Water. Week 8. Jim Jarmush: Stranger Than Paradise. Week 9. Aki Kaurismäki:Leningrad Cowboys Go America, Ariel. Week 10. Victor Erice: The Spirit of the Beehive. Week 11. Leo McCarey: Duck Soup. Week 12. Richard Lester: Help!. Week 13. Ingmar Bergman: The Seventh Seal. Week 14. How to analyze 2: Many films (Privilege, Sid & Nancy, Track 29, Trainspotting, American Graffiti, The Graduate, The Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner, Derek Jarman: The Angelic Conversation, Peter Greenaway: Windows, Water Wrackets). Week 15. Examination Mohsen Makhmalbaf: The Door (in Tales of Kish).
