Abstract

Radical species induced by gamma-ray irradiation in gas hydrates have been investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR). In case of alkane hydrates (methane, ethane, propane and isobutane hydrates), alkyl radicals derived from guest molecules show different behaviors in three temperature ranges. At relatively lower temperature like 77 K, the radicals are stably stored in the hydrates. A water cage plays a role of a cradle to keep an unstable radical. In middle temperature range around 200 K, hydrogen abstraction reactions occur in the hydrates. A radical picks up hydrogen atom from a guest molecule in an adjacent cage. At higher temperature like more than thermodynamically equilibrium temperature at atmospheric pressure, number of the radicals decrease through the radical reactions. These studies reveal that interaction between guest molecules occurs through radical species in gas hydrates.
