Abstract

This study aims to summarize the support for pig farming provided by Hokuren Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives and to reveal its influence on the development of swine farms in Hokkaido. In order to do so, this paper is divided into the period from 1961 to 1981 and the period thereafter. From 1961 to 1981, swine farms in Hokkaido adopted consistent management and expanded in scale. Hokuren Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives supported pig farming through supplying and improving breeding pigs, consulting service, and feeding. Since 1984, swine farms in Hokkaido have been changing to specailized and large-scale farms, and becoming companies. Hokuren Federation of Agricultural Cooperative promotes swine complex creation as overall swine farm support. These efforts are evaluated as having a strong influence on the management stability of swine farms in Hokkaido.
