日本において児童虐待は重大な社会問題となっており，虐待を受けた子どもは様々な困難を示すことが多く報告されている。臨床家の手によって多くの事例報告がなされているが，一部の臨床家や，現場と連携している研究者によって，量的研究も少しずつ進められつつある。虐待を受けた子どもの社会的認知に関する研究や生理学的視点からの検討など，様々な方向性から研究が行われている。量的研究によって得られる知見は，虐待を受けた子どもによく見られる状態，傾向についてのものであり，他者との共有が容易である，一般的な知識とすることができる，その他の指標との関連を検討することが可能であるといった利点がある。量的研究は質的研究と対立するものではなく，むしろ両輪となるべきものであり，今後両者の垣根が低くなり，互いに補い合い支え合うものへと向かっていくことが期待される。
Today child maltreatment becomes a significant social issue in Japan. Many qualitative studies reported that maltreated children have various types of difficulties. There are some quantitative researches about maltreated children. Quantitative researches can make basic knowledges that can be shared, and it will develop not only quantitative researches but also method to care. It is hoped that quantitative researches and qualitative studies together with mutual support.
