Abstract

Yamazaki (2018) demonstrated the functions of Written Manchu subordinate subjects in the genitive form. The study argued the main function of genitive subjects is introducing information in focus mentioned in subordinate clauses. This paper shows contexts related to the genitive subject in subordinate clauses using examples in Yamazaki (2018), and it demonstrates that information in focus, which is introduced in subordinate predicates is referred to in context before and/or after sentences including the genitive subject. In the following sentences, Lio Hai-shi's laughing is the focus of the utterance, and therefore his laughter is also mentioned in the previous context. 〇gemu akū sefi, horho neifi injeme hendume ubade bini sehe,, ... lio-hai-ši -i(gen.) injere be donjifi, uthai deduhei gelhen akū majige aššarakū, “People said, ‘No one is here’. (Lio Hai-shi) opened a door of the hut, laughed out loud and said, ‘Here you are’. ... Hearing Lio Hai-shi laughing, (the raccoon dog) was lying there and did not move at all.” The word injeme “laughing” is used in a context prior to injere “laugh” in the subordinate predicate. The following example is the first part of a conversation between Wang Po and her interlocutor, where drinking is the focus of the dialogue. 〇wang-po hendume, sakda beye bi, niyangdz -i(gen.) ambula omire be sambi,, gūnin be sula sindafi majige omi,, “Wang Po said, ‘I know you drink a lot. Feel free to drink a bit.’” The subordinate predicate contains omire “drink”, and the succeeding utterance also includes omi “drink” (in the imperative form).
