Abstract

The present paper examines the newness of the polysynthetic character of Koryak. First, it verifies the following three points presented by Fortescue (2013) as reflecting its newness: 1)The etymological relatedness of the heavy verbalizing affixes to independent verbs. 2)Residual stress accent on incorporated noun stems 3)“Onion skin morphology”and the absence of an entanglement of inflectional and derivational morphemes. The results include the following: a)Almost half of the verbalizing affixes are not traceable to independent verbs. b)Koryak has free stress accent and the stress of a morpheme can vary according to its position in a word. Therefore we cannot directly relate the stress ofincorporated stems tothe newness of polysynthesis. c)There are partial entanglements of inflection and derivation in such morphemes as je-/ja-..-ŋ‘want to’and future tense, and ine-/ina-/ena- for antipassive and 1SG.O. Next, the present paper examines the validity ofthe argument of Fortescue (2013) that such processes as possessor raising and applicative formation reflect a more advanced stage of polysynthesis in that they involve the whole clause but are expressed by morphological means. We find that the processes might rather reflect the low penetration rate of these processes in Koryak, as in both processes intransitive derivational stems conjugate transitively without morphological realization. Lastly, it examines the polypersonal marking of the language, specifically the peculiar behavior of ine-/ina-/ena-‘1SG.O’,which is added to the outermost slot of the verb complex. The resultreveals that the outermost person markers might restrain the free extension of the word. However, the clarification of the mutual relationship between the features and the newness of polysynthesis remains an issue to be resolved in the future.
