Abstract

In interstellar molecular clouds, there are small icy dust grains, which are mineral particles covered with amorphous solid water. In recent years, it has become clear that the surfaces of icy dust grains play an important role in the chemical evolution and dust aggregation in molecular clouds. However, the structure of the amorphous solid water covering the dust surfaces is not well understood. Although amorphous solid water does not have a fixed structure like crystalline ice, its structure should have some rigidity depending on the conditions of its formation. It is important to understand the surface structure of the amorphous solid water because the physicochemical processes involving the solid dust surfaces depend on this structure. In this paper, we report the current status of research into this topic to clarify the surface structure of amorphous solid water using an atomic force microscope.
