Abstract
Soluble organic compounds in carbonaceous meteorites were studied using high-resolution mass spectrometry equipped with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). More than 600 compounds consisting of CnHmN and CnHmN2 were detected in the methanol extracts of CM and CR chondrites. These alkylated N-heterocyclic homologs mayhavebeensynthesizedfromsimplealdehydes(e.g.,HCHOandCH3CHO)andammoniainmeteoriteparentbodies. The complex mixture of organic compounds detected in the meteorites may have evolved from the simple molecules observed in molecular clouds.
