Abstract

In addition to flyers and Messrelation, decades later also to newspapers, pamphlets of the 16th Century can also be characterized as a printed news media. Some told stories and others conveyed news in the broadest sense. Wilhelm (1996) and other scholars argue that some lists of “text sorts”, “text types” or genres etc. are necessary to clarify the characteristics and functions of pamphlets. In this essay ten pamphlets of the Gustav-Freitag-Collection of the University of Frankfurt are examined on a trial basis. Some texts are characterized as news, but others as stories, similarly to a literary piece. Pamphlets as street literature for the masses could evoke varied images in individual minds, while flyers made a strong but relatively homogenous impression on readers through illustrations.
