抄録	The purposes of this paper are to summarize and evaluate the settlement policy that is implemented in the Xinjiang Uyghur, China, through a case study of nomadic families. Due to the increase in population the number of livestock is increasing steadily in the Xinjiang Uyghur. The main goal of the current settlement policy is to sustain living standard of nomads including those who have relatively small number of domesticated animals. In this respect, the government is introducing a completely new form of livestock production system, so-called settlement, which requires the settlement of the nomadic families. On the other hand, this policy is implemented by the government as an instrument for monitoring and controlling of nomadic population and their movements.
