Abstract

Abstract -- This study aims to help build better internship programs for companies, students, and universities, and in particular, to clarify how universities should support the parties involved. To this end, I analyzed the results of questionnaires for companies and students as well as oral interviews with company representatives, with special focus on whether or not universities were involved in the recruitment process. In open recruitment that did not involve universities, companies tended to have a stronger intention to contact a larger number and more diverse students to find potential employees. Similar intents were observed when companies recruited interns via universities. The results of student questionnaires suggested that they were more conscious of future employment in open recruitment, whereas they rather intended to learn about "working"and self-aptitude in via-university recruitment. By focusing on the recruitment forms, this study provides insights into the meaning of a university’s involvement in internship recruitment and supports that companies and students seek from universities. It is considered that supports to encourage and motivate students and help them determine their objectives will be more and more necessary. Universities should consider enhancing preparatory training programs and possible supports for overall student life.
