動物，植物を問わず，酸化的呼吸は糖などの基質を，O2を消費してCO2とH2Oに分解し，その過程でATPを生成する反応である．植物の葉では光照射下において，同時にO2を消費してCO2を発生する光呼吸反応が行われる．そのため，ミトコンドリアのTCA回路を経由した呼吸を暗呼吸（dark respiration）と呼ぶ．本章では植物組織のCO2発生速度としての暗呼吸速度の測定法について紹介する．
Mitochondrial respiration consumes O2 in the respiratory chain and produces CO2 from the TCA cycle. In illuminated leaves, photorespiration also consumes O2 and produces CO2. In this chapter, I introduce methods of CO2 efflux rate from the TCA cycle in darkened or illuminated leaves.
