In contrast to Japan where classic Japanese language and literature are taught in high school, high school students in the German-speaking countries generally do not study Middle High German language and literature. They associate the Nibelungenlied , which used to be compulsory reading in school, with negative connotations such as‘ Nibelungische Treue（ loyalty）’. But this epic seems to become more and more ‘popular’ in academic research and higher education. In the last two decades, many editions, translations and introductions of the Nibelungenlied have been published. The introduction of bachelor and master courses has moreover led to a rapid increase of various texts, for which the demand of students for introductions, including the Nibelungenlied , must be met. This paper analyses the background of this boom especially with regards to successful online publications and proposes to apply the methods of scholars to o ther genres of medieval literature.
