Abstract

This paper tries to clarify educators’ awareness of language and correction policies and measures in education focusing on the Tohoku region in the Meiji 30’s(1897-1906). In this paper I have analyzed and discoursed about local languages as presented in educational associations’ journals of that time. The area covered is Aomori Prefecture, Akita Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture, Yamagata Prefecture, and Fukushima Prefecture. Educators in the Tohoku region recognized the need to improve the local language. Especially they were concerned with confusions in pronunciation. So they proposed to adopt instruction of shape of mouth and games to correct pronunciation. In the meantime educators were collecting records of dialects. Opinions were divided as to whether dialect words should be corrected or not. Under these circumstances, some schools decided to limit the number of dialect words and posted them inside school. In the Tohoku region, along with the problem of pronunciation and dialect words, speaking styles was another issue educators addressed. At that time speaking events were often held to give students a chance to practice speaking and to open school to parents. It should be noted that students were made to practice standardized Japanese language without realizing it themselves because they used standardized national textbooks as a representative model. Through the above analyses, it may be said that measures clearly intended for correction and measures that resulted in correction unintentionally have both worked to form what is now called “the standard national language.”
