Abstract

Hygroscopicity and cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) activity of atmospheric aerosol particles are important factors that are closely related to their conversion to cloud droplets. In this article, the Ko hler equation, which is used to analyze the CCN activity of aerosol particles, and a parameterκ, which represents the degree of particle hygroscopicity, are explained briefly. Then, studies on the hygroscopicity of organics, which are important for understanding the hygroscopicity and CCN activity of aerosol particles, and the relationship of hygroscopic growth under the conditions of water-vapor supersaturation to that under subsaturated conditions are reviewed, including studies in which the author of this article participated. A future outlook of the studies related to aerosol hygroscopicity and CCN activity is also presented.
