Abstract

We describe recent progresses in the development of series of algorithms to analyze 94GHz cloud radar of CloudSat and lidar of CALIPSO satellites. We introduce our findings from the analysis of these sensors and also discuss how to overcome the current problems and future direction. We develop cloud mask-, cloud particle type and cloud microphysics-algorithms that use the CloudSat and CALIPSO data and the products from those algorithms have been have been generated and distributed. We examine the relation between details of ice particle models and lidar backscattering properties and discuss about the uncertainties in the retrieved microphysics. Finally new observables and possible impact by the Japan-Europe EarthCARE mission are discussed.
