Abstract

The boundary layer clouds have large effects on the Earth radiation budget through their high reflection of solar radiation with significant and long coverage. This paper introduces some interesting studies about the formation, maintenance, and dissipation process of the boundary layer clouds. Especially, the impacts of aerosol on the formation process of the boundary layer clouds through the microphysical process are important. Its effects on the macroscopic characteristics of clouds, such as optical thickness, cloud amount and albedo, through the conversion process from cloud droplets to rain drops are large. One of the interesting results of the studies is that the increasing effect of aerosol number density on the macroscopic feature changes its sign by the condition of the rainfall. The aerosol has impacts not only on the formation process of the boundary layer clouds but also the dissipating process of the clouds.
