It can be said that Jun Eto is a representative of conservative thinkers in Japan after the war. Until the time of the political struggle in 1960, Eto was seen as a progressive intellectual, but during his two-year study abroad in the United States from 1962 to 1964, he discovered “Meiji nationalism” in the United States, and after returning to Japan, he turned to conservatism with “Maturity and Loss,” published in 1967. The main theme of this article is to examine the process of Eto’s ideological turn, which has not been revealed in previous studies, and as the subtitle, I will also focus on Eto’s individualoriented thought. This is because I believe that by exploring this process, we can theoretically examine conservatism as well as Eto’s study, which cannot be solved by an only viewpoint of the confrontation between the vulgar conservative and the liberal.
