本報告の目的は、2020 年に筆者が行なった哲学対話のワークショップの実践を振り返ることで、科学技術をめぐる問題について哲学的に対話することに期待される役割を提示することである。哲学対話においては、「心とは何か」といった抽象度の高い問いが適切なのだという考えがたびたび提示されてきた。このような考えに反して、報告者の行なった哲学対話のワークショップでは、科学技術をめぐる現実的で具体的な問題をテーマにした。このような最新の科学技術をめぐる問題について哲学的に対話することは可能なのか。そして、それには、科学技術コミュニケーションの手法の一つとしていかなる役割が期待されるのか。本報告では、哲学的手法を用いて科学技術をめぐる問題について対話を行なった実例（哲学対話カフェ＠ SCARTS）を振り返る。この振り返りを通して、科学技術をめぐる哲学対話のワークショップの手法を紹介し、その特徴を挙げる。具体的には、（1） 参加者の主導性、（2） 科学の専門家の不在、（3） 問いの多様性、（4）「問いの共有」と「他（者）の思考に触れる」というアウトプット、これら四つの特徴を挙げる。そして、これらの特徴を踏まえた場合、科学技術をめぐる哲学対話には、研究開発の早期から多様な利害関係者や市民に議論の場を開く「アップストリーム・エンゲージメント」の役割が期待されることを示す。
The purpose of this report is to present the expected role of philosophical dialogue in issues related to science and technology by reviewing the practice of a workshop on philosophical dialogue that I conducted in 2020. In philosophical dialogue, the idea has often been proposed that highly abstract questions such as “what is the mind?” are appropriate. Contrary to this idea, the workshop conducted by this author focused on practical and concrete issues related to science and technology. Is it possible to have a philosophical dialogue on such issues? And what role can this dialogue be expected to play as a method of communication in science and technology? In this report, we review an actual case （Philosophical Dialogue Cafe @SCARTS） where we conducted a dialogue on issues surrounding science and technology using philosophical methods. Through this review, I will introduce the method of the workshop and list its characteristics. Specifically, the following four features are mentioned: （1） the initiative of the participants, （2） the absence of scientific experts, （3） the diversity of questions, and （4） the output of “sharing questions” and “exposure to other （people’s） thinking”. In light of these characteristics, we show that philosophical dialogue on science and technology is expected to play the role of“ upstream engagement”, i.e., to be an activity that opens up a forum for discussion to various stakeholders and people while research and development are still in their early stages.
