Abstract

Alutor participles are derived from verbal stems with the suffix -lʔ which is materially identical with the proprietive suffix. I have shown that Alutor participles share a number of features with finite verbs which had been overlooked in previous studies: (a) participles can have transitive subjects in the ergative case; (b) participles can be modified by adverbs; (c) participles can take oblique compliments. I have also pointed out that Alutor has forms corresponding to Chukchi passive (resultative) participles with the suffix -jo, Chukchi obligative forms with the suffix -lʔ-ə-lqəl, and Koryak JQ participles with the suffix -jo-lqəl. Besides, I have shown that Alutor suffix -lqəl w hich has previously been described as a nom inal derivational suffix has m ore com plex features. The present research is largely based on naturalistic data from texts (published and unpublished); elicited data is used only occasionally to fill in gaps. The grammatical features and usages of these suffixes require further consideration.
