Abstract
Kinsui and Takubo (1992b) and their other studies have proposed Discourse Management Theoryin which they attempt to provide anintegrated explanation of the deictic and non-deictic use of Japanese demonstratives. Although their explanation has been influential, their attempt has not been successful in the sense that it treated the deictic use of so- as an exception. This paper argues that the concept of ‘addressee’s attention’, a concept which was introduced into typological studies of demonstratives around the year 2000, makes it possible to truly integrate the deictic and non-deictic use of so- so that deictic use of so- is positioned in Discourse Management Theory naturally. In addition, it is shown that ‘addressee’s attention’makes the contrastive analysis of so- and the middle terms in other languages possible.
