The purpose of this paper is to analyze the factors that have resulted in over-fertilization in sugar beet fields in the Tokachi region. In this study, farmers were classified according to the extent of over-fertilization and unit crop yields. The following conclusions were obtained: Farmers who over-fertilized tended not to adjust the quantity of chemical fertilizer by taking into consideration the amount of compost they were using. In addition, they did not reduce the amount of fertilizer applied because they were worried about possible crop reductions caused by cold weather. Therefore, it will be necessary to get sugar beet farmers to better understand correct fertilization management methods. Moreover, it is also important to offer these farmers technical supoort by evaluating the effects of applications of different amounts of fertilizer.
