Abstract

In 2017, the authors of the Bremen University Working Group - Elisabeth Lienert, Elisa Pontini and Katrin Schumacher - published a new edition of three manuscripts of ‘Virginal’, a German Heroic Epic, including the fragment of ‘Goldemar’. It is to be expected that the publication of this meticulously edited volume, which replaces the editions of Franz Stark(1860) and Julius Zupitza(1870), will lead to a revision of past research achievements. At the same time, the new edition will stimulate the interest of scholars to pursue research on various topics such as the formation of diverse versions, Minne didactics and genre interferences, for which they now have a philologically sound base. The editors have pointed out numerous errors with regards to incorrect words, sentences and metric structures that were found in the Heidelberg Manuscript(1444-48), which was written in the Diebold Laubers workshop in Haguenau, Alsace. Lienert, Pontini and Schumacher propose either one or several ways to reconstruct the correct expressions. Neverthless, we have to learn how to deal with such manuscripts which are full of errors because the same problem can be found in written letter cultures all over the world. As a non-German researcher of another cultural background I would like to propose to reflect upon phenomena ranging from uncocentrated copying to conscious changing of texts through the lense of Cultural Studies. Reflections on differences and similarities with regards to the formation and written transmission of manuscripts would surely be conducive to learning more about the mechanisms of manuscript writing. A related group research will begin in 2018.
