屋号は集落の歴史、過去における人々の暮らしや社会、そして生活環境を知る手がかりとなる。南紀熊野地方の山村集落における社会状況に関する情報収集の一環として、集落に伝わる屋号の調査を行った。調査地は、和歌山県・古座川流域の最奥部に位置する平井集落（古座川町）である。主に2014年から2016年にかけて、この集落に伝わる屋号を住民から聞き取った。その結果、平井集落では少なくとも37の屋号が伝わっていることがわかった。それらの屋号の由来は、主に立地由来、生業由来、社会関係（本家分家など）由来に分けることができた。屋号は親戚関係がなくても、家屋を譲り受けた方が受け継いでいた場合もあった。一方、文字記録に残っていても、所在が不明となっていた屋号もあった。平井集落を含め、古座川流域では人口減少が進んでおり、屋号や過去の生活状況に関する知識や情報が失われつつある。これらを早急に調査し、記録を後世に残しておく必要があるだろう。
Hirai Village was developed in the Kozagawa Basin in Japan’s Kumano Region by the tribes of fleeing soldiers during the 13th century. We asked mainly eight local residents about house names in the village between 2014 and 2016, and could record 37 house names. These house names have been classified into three main originations: location, house branch, and occupation. However, the use of these names is gradually ceasing. It is therefore necessary to gather much information about these house names to better understand life in the past and the history of Hirai Village.
