Abstract

The main points of this paper are summarized as follows: 1) Ainu has two different categories for word: “morphological word” and “lexical word”. “Lexical word” includes “quasi-incorporation” as well as morphological word. 2) The structure ‘objective personal marking + or ‘place’ + position particle’ can be considered a phrase in terms of “morphological word”, but a word with quasi-incorporation in terms of “lexical word”. These two characteristics give the appearance of objective marking by promotion as well as the notional form of a noun. 3) The structure ‘noun + or ‘place’+ position particle’ is a “lexical word” formed by noun incorporation in addition to quasi-incorporation. 4) The structure ‘animate noun + oro ‘the place’ + position particle’ is a phrase formed by the possessive form, since an animate noun is generally hard to incorporate and as a result the characteristics of a morphological word is therefore hard to maintain. However, such a form can still be considered lexically one word in terms of quasi-incorporation.
