Abstract

To interpret the grades of a university class evaluation qualitatively, we examined whether a connection exists between class evaluations, students’ class attendance attitudes, and students’ class impressions. Evaluation factors that we specifically examined were activeness, learning motivation, and satisfaction level. Students who assigned high marks to their activeness in the class evaluation handed in minutes-papers for more than half of the classes. Students who assigned high marks to their motivation for learning in the students’ class impressions gave higher scores to the learning motivation during the class evaluation. Furthermore, in the students’ class impressions, students who expressed high satisfaction level in the class evaluation wrote down positive impressions of the class, their pleasure in learning, and their appreciation of the teacher. Although the present data analysis is in its initial stages, we ascertained relations between class evaluation scores and the student characteristics. The information is expected to be helpful for pursuing more effective improvement of classes using class evaluations.
