Abstract: After pointing out the severity of current biodiversity loss, I argue that the lack of an appropriate theory of biodiversity is one of the main obstacles standing in the way of an appropriate response. Reasons for this lack are investigated, followed by the discussion of a promising route towards building a theory of biodiversity.
