Abstract: Paleomagnetic studies have been carried out on Tertiary rocks ranging in age between 32.3 and 5.8 Ma from southwestern Hokkaido, Northeast Japan. The results establish that southwestern Hokkaido was rotated anti-clockwise through more than 50° since Late Oligocene. This anti-clockwise rotation appears to be linked to the opening of Japan Sea.
