Abstract: Dr. Takeshi Hattori (1909-1991) was a linguist on the Nivkh (Gilyak) language. Before the end of World War II, the southern part of Sakhalin island (south of latitude 50 degrees north) was the Japanese territory. The indigenous peoples such as Nivkh, Uilta and others, except Ainu, mostly lived in Otasu located in the suburbs of Shisuka (now Poronaisk). Dr. Hattori went to Otasu and made fieldworks. He also invited Nivkh informants to Sapporo where he lived. In 1994, a collection of Dr. Hattori's Materials (books, notebooks, recording tapes, microfilms, and photos) was contributed to the Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples. We call it Hattori Bunko. This paper will present the outline of the collection which shows some aspects of his research in the Nivkh language.
