Abstract: | The objective of this study is to explore the effective occupational therapy service to enrich the quality of life of the disabled elderly by evaluating their activity performance and health beliefs. In this study, a qualitative method, i.e. "field-work method", was applied to seventeen disabled elderly, aged from 65 to 86, living in Hokkaido, with interviews taking place in the participants own homes. From the analysis of the subjects' spoken stories relating to their own health, it was confirmed that most of the stories were constructed from the comparison between present and previous conditions of illness and disability, and from the interwoven psychosocial and sociocultural sides of daily life. Also confirmed was that decision making in daily life would promote the beliefs of health in the disabled elderly. From these results, some considerations are discussed for planning and implementing occupational therapy services for the disabled elderly, especially in consideration to individual health beliefs and activities. |
