Abstract: Haskap (Lonicera caerulea var. emphyllocalyx) known as a berry crop is wild plant species in Hokkaido and named after Ainu language. The indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido have been utilized Haskap as fresh fruits or preserved one and believed that this contains functional compounds for their heath. Recently, contents of iron, calcium and anthocyanin has been reported. Furthermore, higher concentration of loganin showing antibiotic activity and reduction of blood pressure is found in leaves, and quinic acid showing effectiveness for infectious disease of the urinary tract is detected in the fruits. To utilize these compounds, differences of the concentrations in developmental stages and each plant strain were measured in this study. In addition, attempts for improving Haskap are introduced.
